SCUBA Rescue & Recovery

The Sound Beach Dive Team was founded in the 1980’s and responds year-round to water based emergencies in Town and to surrounding municipalities. The team is comprised of highly trained volunteer public safety divers and surface support personnel of the Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department. The team trains throughout the year in all types of weather and water conditions. The team is equipped for rapid response operations and is self-sustainable. Divers are equipped with commercial grade diving gear including dry-suits, a full face mask and advanced underwater wireless communications equipment. Each diver is individually fitted for a dry suit and is responsible for maintaining department issued gear that is stored on Rescue 5, the Department’s primary rescue response vehicle.

On average, the Dive Team is called for service a few times a year for rescue and drowning incidents that occur within the Town. The Team has also responded outside of Greenwich to provide mutual aid for other teams in the area. The team trains at least one per month at various locations across Town, including the Mianus River and Long Island Sound.

The team is funded through contributions from the community. Click here to learn more about becoming a member or making a financial contribution to the team.
